Notes of Hope for December

National Cancer Survivors Day

National Cancer Survivors Day, created by the NCSD Foundation, is held annually on the first Sunday in June. This year it will be celebrated on Sunday June 5th 2016. This day is marked as a celebration for all who are survivors. National Cancer Survivors Day also recognizes those who have been recently diagnosed, families and other support systems, and outreach in the community. This is a day for everyone including friends and medical professionals. Another key purpose of National Cancer Survivors Day is to raise awareness about the continuing challenges cancer survivors face so our country can promote research and other resources that are important factors in improving quality of life.

The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation reports that a cancer survivor is anyone who is living with a history of cancer. This definition indicates that a person is a cancer survivor from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of his or her lifetime.  The Cancer Support Community defines a ‘survivor’ in those same terms.  This day is not only to celebrate survivors, but also to bring awareness about what people living with cancer are challenged with during and after their treatments. It is a great time to gain knowledge into all aspects of what it is like to live with cancer and how our community can help.  Join us in honoring and appreciating survivors!

Program Spotlights

We welcome intern Nicole Dunbar to our organization!  She will be regularly attending our biweekly Friends/Family Support Group, weekly People Living With Cancer Tuesday Night Group, evening Yoga, Creative Expression, and a variety of other activities to give her a vast experience within our services.  Here’s what she has to say about her  first few weeks …

My name is Nicole and I am a summer intern at Cancer Support Community. I am a graduate student at Marywood University in Scranton Pennsylvania earning my master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. I have been enjoying my time as an intern as I am really learning the value of unconditional support and empathy. Although I have been involved in the counseling field for a few years, I have just had my first experience with meditation and yoga during my initial weeks at Cancer Support Community.

Through my participation in the Slatebelt Series, I gained insight into how to achieve inner peace, relaxation, and how to redirect my thoughts when they begin to stray. I also participated in one of the meditative workshops within the Kids Support series where our group was guided into a state of mindfulness with soft words and light music. I am happy to say that I will no longer wonder if meditation and yoga are right for me! I look forward to continuing to practice more meditation and yoga, as it will benefit my mind, body, and spirit.

Nicole shared some wonderful feedback in her snapshot of our programs. I hear similar words of appreciation from attendees at these programs, and the impact it has on their health and wellbeing during treatment and throughout survivorship.

Please join us on Wednesday, June 29th at 9:00 a.m. as the Cancer Support Community participates in a special initiative convened by the United States White House Cancer Moonshot Taskforce and Vice President Joe Biden. Similar summits across the country will take place that day with the goal of opening dialogue and encouraging collaborations for accelerating the pace of progress in cancer research, prevention, treatment, and care.
All are invited to attend – patients, survivors, caregivers, oncologists, researchers, philanthropists, advocates, dignitaries and data experts – to gather under the national charge to raise awareness and forge progress toward a cure.  A livestream of remarks from the Vice President will be presented.  The Moonshot summits are intended to spur discussions, generate ideas, and bring communities together to talk about the impact of cancer.

More information about the Cancer Moonshot initiative can be found at  RSVP to attend on June 29th at the Cancer Support Community by contacting the executive director, Paula Ream-Dorward, at or call (610) 861-7555, extension 24.

Notes from the Executive Director

“Joyful activities can remind us to do more of what we love. Painful ones can sometimes remind us ‘to thine own self be true’ and lead us back to authenticity as we realize what does not feed our souls.” ~ Charlene Costanzo, author of the ‘Twelve Gifts’ book series

With pleasant weather finally here, let’s think about healthy ways to enjoy the outdoors and live in harmony with Mother Nature. There is all kinds of advice out there about sun protection, ingredients in skin lotions, as well as the benefits and detriments of sun exposure. Then there’s the latest alerts of the Zika virus from a simple mosquito bite, and other alarming bug problems. Where do we turn for reliable information? How can we be primed for fun in the sun or an evening by the campfire?

Be proactive in preparing for your alfresco activities. Read ingredients on product labels. Wear appropriate clothing. Know the warning signs for skin cancers and the possible reactions from insect bites. And if you have any questions or concerns, seek advice from a medical professional.

Here are a few informational links to help guide you in making the right choices for you and your family so that you can safely enjoy the summer and live well throughout the year.

"Each experience, each frustration, each situation, has its own truth waiting to be revealed. Don't give up until you find it - for yourself."  ~ Melody Beattie, American self-help author

Wishing you well, and a safe prelude to summer,
Paula Ream-Dorward, Executive Director
